CHURCH STATENorthwest Rankin High School is a public high school located in Flowood, Mississippi. On Tuesday April 9th, a  student, representing Pinelake Baptist Church, addressed an assembly at the school and showed a video of two young men who had been “saved” from drugs and sex. Several students reported the mandatory assembly, during school hours, to the Appignani Humanist Legal Center (AHLC). AHLC coordinator William Burgess sent a letter of condemnation to principal Charles Frazier.

Thoughts on Proselytizing

A Facebook friend (who is IFB) posted something about seeing the Osteens on the news this morning. She said they were discussing the need to forgive the Boston bombers to prevent bitterness. But, she was very disappointed that they didn’t make a point of saying Jesus was the answer. No mention of salvation. What a tragedy for non-Christians everywhere who were looking to the Osteens for answers.

It is taking a lot of self control to keep me from making a comment. The statements she made make me laugh and then feel angry. I think some of my anger stems from the fact that I once would have agreed with her and “liked” her status. The other bit of anger comes from using a news story about a time of crisis to proselytize those watching. If we want religion, if we’re looking for your god, we will come to church and ask you for more information. Shouting the name of Jesus from the rooftops doesn’t make me want to go ask you questions. It makes me laugh at you/be scared of you and think you’re a deranged lunatic. Quiet testimonies are More

Sex Ed Horror Stories

Awful, awful stories. I will never understand why sane people have such a hard time educating the next generation about sex. In a religious context, controlling sex ed is away of controlling people – I get that. But why would normal people NOT want their kids to know that sex makes babies, so unless you want babies you should take measures to prevent unwanted pregnancies?

This is Disgusting

Article: Abortion Clinic Horror

I am pro-choice, and consider that a true tenet of being pro-life (as opposed to pro-heartbeat, anti-aid, pro-war, etc.). I’m not anti-abortion, but what is being described in this article is horrible. It’s disgusting! What human in their right mind decapitates babies? I certainly would agree that there comes a point when the performance of an abortion is inhumane and wrong, and support laws that stop legal abortions after a certain period of time in the pregnancy.

I Want to Save the World… But How?

There are a lot of things in this world that are really, really wrong. People who are killed, families torn apart, children who are starving. So many of us seem set on promoting violence and war instead of peace. How many millions have died because we couldn’t get along and show love to our neighbors?

Then there are all of the problems that have come with industrialization and modern things. The great power of science is being used for profit instead of the good of the people and the very future of humanity could be at stake (antibiotic resistant illnesses, GMO’s, global warming caused by plastics and so many other things, polluted air and water, chemicals in our food and everything around us).

It’s a lot to take in, and once you have taken it all in, you’re left wondering, “Well… what now? What can I do?” More

Article: Why “Zero Dark Thirty” Made Me Cry

Why “Zero Dark Thirty” Made Me Cry.

Haven’t seen the film myself, but I can understand and agree with what the author says. The bit about both sides thinking they are doing the right thing really hits home. I’ve often thought about that. Reality isn’t full of bad guys wearing black and good guys wearing white. Kill or be killed is a horrible way to live, but humanity has chosen that for thousands of years. That is certainly worth weeping over.
