Radical Notions

Up until the last hundred years (approximately), all/most:

Milk went straight from the cow to being used for butter, cheese, yogurt, etc (raw milk)

Produce was never treated with pesticides & other chemicals (organic)

Produce & Animals were of the heirloom or hybrid varieties (non-GMO)

Animals were kept on pasture as long as it was seasonally available (grass fed meat)

Eggs & Chicken came from hens who moved about freely, ate bugs, & scratched in the dirt (free range)

Food came from a nearby farmer, butcher, or your own backyard (local, self-sufficient)

Food was grown by farmers who rotated crops & the pastures used for grazing, grew a variety of items, etc. (sustainable)

These things aren’t new; they’re much older than the recent changes brought on by the Industrial Age. We really screwed up when we prioritized convenience and easy over quality and sustainability.

Remind me again why I’m crazy and radical for wanting the same things?

local is growing

Saw a normal doctor last week. First time since last October (yay!). The appointment didn’t go very well; I left feeling like I needed to cry. The last few times I’ve seen this doctor things went smoothly and I liked her, but not this time. She made me feel like an idiot and didn’t take the time to hear what I was saying. I guess she thought she should just speak her mind instead. Anyway. That’s another doctor whom I no longer have confidence in – the list keeps growing. I generally have a distrust for conventional doctors these days, unless I need to go to the ER for something (and even then… haha). I’m tired of getting screwed over by them, tired of reading about lots of other people getting screwed by them, and I want out of the sick-care system. 

I wish insurance would cover more alternative medical treatments. I dearly want to find a good homeopathic or herbalist, but I’m not sure I could pay for their services right now. I see holistic medicine as the ideal form – why is that so against the grain? Doesn’t it make more sense to look at the whole body when deciding on treatment? Shouldn’t doctors have nutritional training as well? Since so many problems can be addressed by what you eat, that should be a no-brainer.

I Want to Save the World… But How?

There are a lot of things in this world that are really, really wrong. People who are killed, families torn apart, children who are starving. So many of us seem set on promoting violence and war instead of peace. How many millions have died because we couldn’t get along and show love to our neighbors?

Then there are all of the problems that have come with industrialization and modern things. The great power of science is being used for profit instead of the good of the people and the very future of humanity could be at stake (antibiotic resistant illnesses, GMO’s, global warming caused by plastics and so many other things, polluted air and water, chemicals in our food and everything around us).

It’s a lot to take in, and once you have taken it all in, you’re left wondering, “Well… what now? What can I do?” More

Clean Water, At Last!

Back in late 2010 (or early 2011, not sure), I began seeing a massage therapist who promoted natural, green living. She kept chickens in her backyard (in the city), grew her own herbs, had a compost pile, collected rainwater, walked instead of driving when possible, and didn’t wear a bra. She was extremely friendly and genuine. Looking back, I’m almost certain she was Wiccan or at the least Pagan, which is cool. Anyway. She lent me a book that helped open my eyes so that I could see the corruption and abuse around me. It discussed things like how fluoride came to be put into the public’s drinking water (it didn’t have anything to do with dental health), the effects of pesticides and insecticides on human health and our environment, and so many other things. It was all very new and overwhelming to me at the time; parts of me were skeptical, but the more I observed and experienced in life the more I knew the information was true (the book’s sources and more research on my part were a big factor, of course). The truth about what is in public water has weighed heavy on my mind ever since. The things we ingest on a daily basis, when consuming public water, are far from safe. Rather, the chemicals and such in our water are poisonous to our bodies. Small children, infants, and fetuses are especially susceptible to these toxins. Fluoride may or may not be beneficial for teeth when used topically, but it is NOT beneficial to ingest it. Even the ADA is beginning to recognize this fact. Can’t Sleep, So I Blog… About Birth Control

I should really be in bed. Instead, I’m sitting here sipping the remnants of a smoothie, jamming to my strong emotions playlist (Nightwish, Evanescence, Within Temptation, etc.), and blogging. Daylight savings hasn’t really effected me, since we don’t live by a set schedule anyway. Last night I ended up blogging because I couldn’t sleep. Why is my sleep schedule suddenly so messed up? I went off my birth control pill, after about six months of usage. If reading about things like birth control makes you squeamish, you may discontinue reading this post.

Now, why did I ditch my pills? Well, the GAPS diet I mentioned in my previous post is all about healing my gut and making sure the good bacteria are in charge. Taking hormonal birth control like the pill screws up your gut flora. Not something an OBGYN has ever mentioned to me, but the research is there.

New Things to Learn (Yay!) & Some Thoughts

I’m very excited about a new course of study I’ve begun. It’s teaching the importance of diet in conceiving, pregnancy, lactation, and in creating healthy future generations. I don’t plan on conceiving just yet, but I know I want to do it in the nearish future, and by planning ahead and doing things correctly now, I will be giving my baby a better start in life (and my subsequent grandchildren). Here is the course and the book that is written by the same author.
I’ve done plenty of reading about traditional foods and how they affect fertility and genetics, but this course has much to offer that is both new to me and very important. The first lesson got me thinking about all the various factors throughout history that have affected a mother’s ability to carry and produce healthy children. The availability of nutrient-dense food is a huge factor, but there are also things like religious views towards family planning/spacing children apart, outside attacks due to war or raiding, quality of the water, and exposure to deadly illnesses. Given all the hardships and sorrows humanity has faced over the years, it’s a wonder we’re still alive. More
